WHAT IS ALPHA? Alpha is a series of interactive sessions to discuss the Christian faith in an informal and friendly environment. Alpha consists of 8 talks, looking at topics including 'Who is Jesus?' and 'Why and how do I pray?’ At Cathcart Trinity Alpha, we meet at 7pm for some light food and chat followed by tea, coffee and cakes!!. This is followed by a DVD on one of the topics. We then have a short time of informal relaxed discussion in small groups talking about what we have watched.
You don’t have to come for the whole term – just pop along for the first session and see what you think. NO PRESSURE.
SO WHO IS ALPHA FOR? Alpha is for everyone; no question is out of bounds and you are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish. We don’t assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity and everyone is welcome.
AND WHEN WILL THE NEXT COURSE START? We run an Alpha course once a year typically starting around September; details are posted on the Web site well in advance.
STILL NOT SURE? Then why not try one of our Alpha taster evenings. This is a one night course that does what it says on the tin "a taste of what the course is about" and as always it’s relaxed, informal and friendly with Definitely NO PRESSURE.
AND WHAT ABOUT US? Well the Alpha team here at Cathcart trinity are all about sharing and helping others discover the Christian faith in a friendly and definitely informal setting. We love meeting new people and having a chat and we would love to meet you.
Based on Paul's letter to the Philippians, this is a 8 week course that runs alongside the main Alpha course covering such subjects as " new heart, new purpose, new attitude, and a new confidence. It is especially helpful for those who are just starting out in the Christian life and is an ideal follow-up to the Alpha course. And again is all about discovering in a friendly, relaxed setting.
Sofa Groups are about fellowship and exploring the Bible. During session 2013-14 we are using the "Hearing the Word" resource to investigate the "Seven Miraculous Signs" from John's Gospel. Sofa Groups generally meet in the homes of Cathcart Trinity or Cathcart United Free members. Meeting times of the various groups are:
Cathcart Trinity is the home of "Jesus: The Evidence”.
Jesus: The Evidence (JtE) is an range of outreach tools - a course, a booklet and a website www.jesustheevidence.com, designed to engage with non-Christians.
"There is a historical and rational basis for Jesus being the Son of God. There is a wealth of evidence to support this."
The JtE resources have been developed primarily for people who would classify themselves as either agnostics or atheists. However, we’ve found that these resources are also of use to Christians – as JtE can help provide a grounding in the historical and rational aspects of our faith. This, in turn, can help Christians sharing their faith with non-Christians.
Since running our first, 3-night course at Cathcart Trinity Church in 2008, we have successfully run courses in various locations around Scotland. So far in 2013, we’ve organised 17 JtE outreach evenings – from Lairg in the North to Irvine in the South.
Would a JtE presentation fit with your outreach work? Presentations and booklets are free. We would be delighted to hear from you and discuss in more detail how we could support your outreach work. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to find out more.
